INDIA REINVENTED!!

This blog is my interpretation of the top 3 Indian trends that have followed suit internationally and are one if the biggest ‘It’ trends to have in your closet as well as on the runways.

India’s exquisite blend of old and new is legendary. Fashion is now an important new sales driver in India, domestic and international brands are scrambling to adjust their designs to cater to the Indian market. The Indian fashion stage is a reflection of deep cultural influences. Indian fashion wear has been constantly evolving, thanks to foreign traders, western colonialism. However, Indian fashion industry's forte lies in its free-wheeling nature that aids absorb and transform anything foreign into truly Indian so much so that it becomes very difficult to identify its true origin. Today, the India fashion industry is driven by customer choices as well as globalization of Indian economy. Just as Indian designers draw upon the West, so do westerners look at India for inspiration.

These are a few example of the west taking inspiration from india.

·         Paul Smith transforms the saree

·         Dries Van Noten is designing hot outfits with Indian textiles and fabrics for celebrities.

·         Gautier has produced a line on Lord Krishna.

·         Madonna sports bindis and the Om symbol in mehendi.

·         Prada has come up with a collection of entirely handmade garments from the workshops that specialize in Chikan– the most ancient and refined type of Indian embroidery– as well as handmade, multicolored ballerina flats, sandals and handbags that employ an equally sophisticated traditional weaving technique.

Trend 1: THE INGENIOUS DHOTI

The traditional Dhoti , that staple of everyday wear, especially in rural India, has suddenly become a hot favorite globally. Like all good designs the secret to this particular trend is that it suits all body types be it Tall, Short, Voluptuous or Skinny, It works for everyone.

Its no wonder that from FabIndia to Giorgio Armani to Fashion street in Mumbai to Ralph Lauren the dhoti pant has permeated fashion’s imagination. They are now a realm of timeless fashion.

Trend 2: THE MODERN KURTA

It's now the hottest “international” Indian garment since the bandgala and jodhpurs. Yes, before you sniff at the idea of picking up a kurti at your nearest Fabindia outlet, remember that it now costs a packet in its overseas avatar at Bergdorf Goodman or Harvey Nicks.

And why not, when this retro-fitted Indian garment of the hippie Flower Power era of the 70s is now the mantra of the chic set?

An icon of a fascinating mix of history and modernity, the kurta could well trace its impressive lineage back to the Mughal garment to tempt and tantalize the wearer in the fickle world of seasonal fashion.

The kurti, that multifaceted Indian tunic top, is positively revelling in its global fashion limelight now. So much so that kurti tops are a prominent part of the collection of popular high street stores such as Old Navy, Forever 21, H&M, Charlotte Ruses or even Chloe.

Worn under a jacket to work, or bejeweled for night-out wear, or even teamed with jeans for that hippie throwback look, the Indian kurti is doing it all. Ethnic prints and fabrics, embroidery and bright colours add to the global crossover appeal of the garment. It gained popularity abroad as it is a form of a 'tunic' and that (in all its avatars) was a hot silhouette. From yoga to colourful Indian festivals such as Holi, the world is now fascinated with all things Indian. So it's no surprise that big fashion labels, like Prada, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Roberto Cavalli, Valentino, Diane Von Furstenberg and John Bartlett have all added kurtis and kurtas to their collections.”

These kaftans are usually made of chiffon and are cut in a way to create an extravagant and fluid look. They are further enhanced with beautiful and intricate beadwork or Swarovski crystal work done in large motifs, to create a look of pure elegance. However they can be custom made. These can be worn on the beach or just about anywhere.
